At Zona 78’s midday happy hour, you can get a Dog Fish Head for cheaper than a glass of iced tea. If this image doesn’t disgust you, that means you’re a beer snob. And if you’re a beer snob, this is the place to binge.

The deals: The mid-range Italian bistro on River Road (the Tanque Verde location offers the same happy hour) serves a number of $2 microbrews from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. In addition to the aforementioned Dog Fish Head IPA, you can get Fat Tire, Nimbus Blonde, Moretti Birra, 8th Street Ale and more on tap.

And while you’re at it, you can get some pretty cheap food as well. During happy hour, all of Zona 78’s different bruschettas and appetizers are half price. We started out with the antipasti platter for two, which is normally $13.

The food: For the $6.50 we paid, we got a mountain of food: several slices of prosciutto and salami, olives, lightly grilled zucchini, pepperdews, roasted red peppers, three types of cheese, garlic toast, artichoke hearts and two pieces of marinated sweet fennel, which tasted pickled onion. If I had attempted to get even half of these items at the store, I would have paid much more, nevermind all that time it would take to prepare. The cheeses—several slices of house-made mozzarella, a brie-like tallegio and a thinly sliced fontina—were first-rate, and paired beautifully with the crisp, buttery toast. On top of that, we got several slices of rustic bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the side. I liked to mix and match the different pieces, making little sandwiches out of an artichoke heart, cheese and a piece of meat.

The plate was alone to fill me up, but we also ordered the bianco pizza ($4.50, normally $9), a thin-crust cheese pizza with a layering of white truffle oil. The mozzarella and parmesan-reggiano cheeses had been baked into multiple uneven layers of paper-thin shavings, giving the top a dotted texture like an ornate piece of dry coral. The crust was thin but doughy, and you could taste little hints of garlic popping out from the cracker.

The goat cheese and asparagus bruschetta, ($4.25, normally $8.50) was superior to the pizza, mostly because it was covered with rich, smoky shreds of pancetta, or Italian bacon. The soft meat, sticks of asparagus and creamy chevre provided an excellent topping for the crisp bread. It just goes to show that you don’t need tomato on top of bruschetta to make it taste good. As long as it’s all covered with cheese.

Bottom line: Zona 78’s well-crafted starters are surprisingly more authentic than their name and location would suggest. While the atmosphere has a more casual Foothills chic-ness, the food mimics the temperance and care of an Italian master. Plus, their deals are out of this world.

Expect to be challenged, delighted and entranced.”
One complimentary glass of wine is included in the entrance charge, along with a $10 certificate for dining at the Grill at Hacienda del Sol.
Hacienda del Sol and Asia together aim to create an intimate environment between piano and patron by delighting guests in the quaint Hacienda Room, located just off the side of the resort’s esteemed Grill at Hacienda del Sol restaurant.
Asia’s sessions will last for one hour, from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Hacienda del Sol will serve guests one complimentary glass of wine during the session.
Tucson, Ariz. – The musical entertainment at Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort has undergone a makeover, creating an identity matched among the most desirable nightly music destinations in Tucson.
Hacienda del Sol’s music calendar is expanding – beginning in June – to feature a plethora of star-rated musicians Thursday through Sunday evenings. The majority of the acts – a combination of local and international distinction – will perform at 7:00 p.m. on the patio of Hacienda’s del Sol’s acclaimed restaurant The Grill.
From Tucson Tammie Award winners to an Australian folk slide guitarist and finalists of the Last Smash Platinum Bash opening act competition at Arizona Stadium, Hacienda del Sol has acquired some of Tucson’s most familiar faces to perform at the historic hotel with a most inviting environment for music aficionados.
For a complete calendar of music acts at Hacienda del Sol, call 520.299.1501 or visit www.haciendadelsol.com.
Conner Cecil – Sundays June 7, June 14, and June 21, 2009: A native of Globe, Arizona, Conner Cecil has expanded his musicianship to Tucson with the release of his 2008 debut album “Conner” and was a finalist to perform the opening act at the Last Smash Platinum Bash before headliners Jay Z and Kelly Clarkson. Cecil’s amiable on-stage presence and country-pop twang make this 23-year-old a loveable addition to the Hacienda music roster.
Five Way Street – Saturdays June 13 and June 20, 2009: Baby boomers rejoice in the hit cover tunes performed by Five Way Street. The band’s set list includes such classic rock hits as Eric Clapton’s “Layla” and “Paint it Black” by the Rolling Stones, among others.
Stefan George – Every Thursday in June and July: Inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in 1998 for his acoustic style of play, Stefan George has been a staple name among Tucson’s best singer/songwriters for years. George has toured nationally and internationally, but always finds time to return to his roots in the Southwest.
Brian Lopez – Exclusive Performance Sunday, June 28, 2009: Lopez is most recognized for his haunting vocals and ripping guitar in one of Tucson’s favorite exports Mostly Bears. Mostly Bears has toured nationally, playing at such prestigious venues such as South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas and was a finalist to open for the Last Smash Platinum Bash. Lopez brings the music back home in this solo outing, with crooning vocals and rhythmic guitar.
Grams & Krieger – Saturdays July 4, July 11, and July 18, 2009: Tammie Award winners Grams & Krieger have entertained Tucsonans as an “Americana” duo for a collective 50 years. The musicians’ blend of acoustic blues, country, roots rock and oldies earn the men admiration among fans, along with spots in the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame. Grams & Krieger will bring their local following to Hacienda del Sol for a groovy Fourth of July.
Sentido – Every Friday in June and July: Latin-and flamenco-infused Sentido unearths the rhythms and sounds of traditional Spain. The blend of intricate guitar tempos with strong vocals and percussion beats is tranquil under the lush patio of The Grill.
Greg Spivey – Saturday June 6 and June 27, 2009: As bold of an entertainer as they come, Greg Spivey keeps his audiences laughing and dancing all night long. Spivey and his five-piece ensemble are known to play their flavor of country music throughout Southern Arizona and add Hacienda del Sol to its growing list of venues.
Kerryn Tolhurst – Every Sunday in July: An Australian roots rock legend, Tolhurst has performed with such bands as Country Radio and The Dingoes. Today, Tolhurst prefers to hang behind the scenes as a producer, songwriter and studio musician. At Hacienda del Sol, Tolhurst – with guests – will impress the audience with his extraordinary acoustic slide guitar skills and melodic tunes.

Tucson, Ariz. – Lead vocalist for the original Blues Brothers Band, Jonny Rosch is no stranger to both the world’s biggest stages and most intimate live performances.
Rosch has performed live for over thirty years at some of the country’s most prestigious venues, including the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem, Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, and Carnegie Hall, where he was backed by the legendary Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops Orchestra.
Rosch, a vivacious personality, has chosen a more casual atmosphere for his next two performances on an exclusive trip to Tucson, performing on the popular dining patio, Terraza del Sol, at The Grill at Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch Resort. Rosch will be performing on Friday March 20 and Saturday March 21, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
Rosch will perform on keyboards, vocals, and harmonica. Other musicians may be announced to join the talented musician.
Hacienda del Sol will give guests an intimate, yet up-tempo, musical session with the renowned band leader and recording studio owner, who has performed with many of the world’s top musicians including Joe Walsh, Phoebe Snow, Bo Diddley, Tommy James and the Shondells, Joan Jett, Billy Squier, Steve “The Colonel” Cropper, Eddie “Knock On Wood” Floyd, John Oates, Jonathan Edwards, Robert Randolph, and numerous other recording artists.
Rosch will arrive at Hacienda del Sol as the weather turns to spring, making the patio setting of Terraza del Sol a picturesque locale for Rosch’s live performances. The Terraza del Sol will serve an array of food from its bar menu, but patrons may also order from the award-winning Grill’s dinner menu. There is no cover charge, however, reservations are recommended for premier patio seating.
Bandleader Jonny Rosch has been performing and recording as a vocalist, keyboardist, harmonica player and songwriter for more than thirty years. He leads his own band, Jonny Rosch and Friends, and serves as its musical director and supervisor. Additionally, Rosch has owned a recording studio and production company in New York for 25 years. Rosch is in preproduction for his own recording project when he is not touring as the front man with the original Blues Brothers Band.
The Grill at Hacienda del Sol is open daily 5:30 to 10:00 p.m. Terraza del Sol, The Grill’s patio dining, hosts the same hours with live music Thursday through Sunday evenings. Live jazz piano can be heard in the Joesler Room every evening from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m., a lively addition to the dining experience at The Grill at Hacienda del Sol.
